chem chem confusing chem

why is it that hourigan always changes her mind? first she says tertiary alcohols can't be oxidised at all then she says actually they can with burning. it's really confusing when she does that.

and she can't even remember a-level standard tests. she did a minor in chemistry in univ, but she seems to have trouble remembering a-level standard chemistry.

which is cool but not when you're a teacher...

chemistry sucks.

ahhhhh this is what she means

You can oxidise all alcohols but in different ways
You can BURN all alcohols
But
You can only oxidise primary and secondary alcohols using Acidified Pottasium dichromate (its acidified with Sulphuric acid if you wanna know) and refluxing it

Primary alcohol: oxidise it you get an Aldehyde oxidise it more you get a Carboxylic acid

Secondary alcohol: oxidise it and you get a Ketone

I think she was just chatting about when you oxidise alcohols with reagants rather than just burning them
